Unlocked phones soon not to work for cingular?

I talked to a Cingular phone guy and he told me that this summer unlocked phones will not work with Cingular wireless due to they are changing there network or something like that. Anybody else heard this?

  1. That's not my problem. If my phone stops working then they have violated the contract and as far as I'm concerned that will terminate it, and I'm not paying. So what's the issue?
  2. They can't do that. That's the beauty of GSM - you can insert your SIM in any unlocked phone. In fact, for a nominal price, I've heard of dealers who will unlock, say, T-mobile phones so that you can insert your Cingular SIM card in.
  3. Sounds to me like you talked to an authorized agent and not someone who works for the company. If you have a GSM phone that will recognize a Cingular SIM card it will work and regardless of what the company does to upgrade/integrate its network there is nothing it can do to prevent your phone from working. This person you spoke to may be confused about the announcement that Cingular will deactivate its TDMA network in 2007/2008. If that happened today it would only effect something like 5% of Cingular users; but if you have a phone with a GSM Cingular SIM card you have nothing to worry about.
